Tips for new residents
Learn Spanish
Although people in tourist areas speak English, knowing some Spanish will make everyday life much easier.
Spanish time
Spaniards eat late (lunch at 2-3pm, dinner at 9-10pm) and rest in the afternoon (siesta). Adjust to the rhythm!
Get to know your neighbours
Spaniards are very sociable. Don't be surprised if a neighbour invites you round for a coffee or some tapas!
Local markets
Instead of supermarkets, visit the local markets (mercado) - the produce is fresher and often cheaper.
Air conditioning
In summer the temperature can exceed 40°C. Invest in air conditioning - it's not a luxury but a necessity!
Public holidays
Spain has many national and local public holidays. Check the calendar before planning any visits!
Summary
Life in Spain is a wonderful experience for anyone who values a sunny climate, good food and a welcoming atmosphere. The move does, however, require proper preparation — from sorting out the paperwork, to finding somewhere to live, to arranging healthcare.
Spain offers a high quality of life at affordable prices compared with other Western European countries. It is an ideal place for anyone looking for a fresh start or a second home in sunny Europe.
